Educator Training Workshops

Long Island Children's Museum offers eight dynamic, hands-on workshops to add to your teacher training schedule this year. Each workshop is tailored to meet the objectives of your school and/or school district. Workshops are 90-minutes in length and can be presented at your site or at the Children's Museum.

Early Childhood Workshops (Nursery–First Grade)
Early Reading, Literacy
Whether your students are seasoned readers, just learning their ABC's, or are learning English as a second language, developing visual literacy skills and competencies can make literary experiences much more rewarding. This workshop offers ways to practice visual discrimination and interpretation of images, objects and symbols as you explore creative uses of these competencies in a fun and interactive way.

Word Play
Literacy, ESL
Play-time is also language time and the time for organizing ideas and developing skills. With a direct focus on students who have LEP (Limited English Proficiency), this workshop is designed to take a "Hands-On" interdisciplinary approach to play and language acquisition for English language learners.

Elementary Workshops
The Monkey in the Museum—
(Modifiable for Pre-K–Sixth Grade)

Literacy, Art
Teachers will explore ways of integrating literacy into the art process in this fun workshop based on the nationally recognized instructional model called Image Making in the Written Process. This hands-on technique guides children to choose patterns and shapes to make fantastical images, play with words and language to give their image a name and practice their use of descriptive language as they write a poem about their creation. This technique provides children with a sense of accomplishment and pride; elevating their confidence as both writers and artists.

Fishtales (Modifiable for First-Sixth Grade)
Science, Dissection, Long Island Maritime Geography
Teachers become active participants in an engaging, multi sensory “journey,” we call Fishtales. During this interdisciplinary workshop, teachers will learn Long Island geography, history and the ecological role that fish play in our environment. Teachers will learn the “art” of correctly dissecting a fish, and be given a chance to closely examine each organ, discuss function and compare with the human body. The workshop concludes as each participant is provided with a taste of the fish cooked before their eyes.

This workshop can be modified to address early fishing methods used by Native tribes or early settlers on Long Island, as well as historic or current fishing capabilities. Following the workshop, teachers will participate in literacy-
based activities in which they apply different techniques that further the experience for their students.

Table Top Puppetry (Second–Sixth Grade)
Literacy, Storytelling, Theater, Puppetry
Get a front row seat as LICM explores literacy and creativity through the use of interactive storytelling. Using dynamic story telling strategies found in Aesop’s Fables, teachers will explore methods to introduce students to the key elements of a good story: plot, setting, character development and conflict, and the impact a change in any of these elements can have on a story's ending. Teachers will also explore the art of puppetry and fun, easy-to-make puppets for classroom use.

Nature in the Classroom (Pre-K–Second Grade)
Science, Math, Outdoor Education
Learn how to incorporate math, literacy and science lessons into your outdoor curriculum with LICM. Children today are introduced to global environmental issues such as rainforest depletion and climate change before they learn about, and learn to appreciate, the natural environment of their own backyard and surrounding landscape. This workshop brings to life the many ways you can use the outdoors as your dynamic classroom for lessons on sorting, classification, poetry, gardening and biology. This training module is a work-shop, but can alsobechosenasatalk/speech at your site.
